The very first commands God gave to his people involved idol worship. The idols make look different today, but it is still of utmost important to have no other gods besides Yahweh.
What we can’t do is mix his kingdom and ours. Some things, like oil and water, don’t mix.
Humans are hardwired to worship something. We are designed to recognize something that is greater than ourselves, and honor that something. In the process, we hope this something (whatever we worship) will be able to make our lives better. We believe it will protect us, satisfy us, and watch over us. The problem arises when we start worshipping something other than God. Â
Jeremiah’s God is living and active. He created the universe and controls the weather. There is evidence of his power all around us. On the other hand, the idols are made out of gold, have no breath, and no power. They are puny gods.
The song repeatedly reminds the listener that no matter how much fame or success they earn, it will never be enough. It reminds us of the futility of seeking joy, meaning, and purpose in something as trivial as accomplishment or wealth.
